Thousands of young men and women
answered the call to serve the citizens of this
nation.  Several "gave it all" and never
returned to their families and homes in Jersey
County.  Over 880 young men joined with
"Uncle Abe's" forces to preserve the Union.

JERSEY COUNTY WAR MEMORIAL
DEDICATED NOVEMBER 11, 1973

MEMORIAL COMMISSION
Jersey County War Memorial Commission
201 W. Pearl Street
Jerseyville, Illinois
August 17, 1992

On. September 27, 1972, the Jersey County War Memorial Commission was formed.  The purpose of
this Commission was to erect a fitting Memorial to the Veterans of all Wars who gave their lives in
defense of our country.

On July 28, 1973 the War Memorial Stone was erected and placed in prominence on the lawn of the
Jersey County Courthouse.  The Veterans and the community had honored those “who gave their last
full measure.”

Renovations have been made down through the years and now, on the 50th anniversary of the
bombing of “Pearl Harbor” and World War II the War Memorial Commission would like to put the final
touch to the Memorial by adding three fiberglass flag poles directly behind the Memorial and another
circle flower garden to the east of them.
(The enclosed sketch will illustrate the proposed design).

Once again, this Memorial represents the entire community and reflects a caring and grateful spirit on
the part of our citizens.  The tradition of patriotism and gratitude has passed from generation to
generation and is reflected so appropriately by the Memorial and “Eternal Flame” honoring our
Veterans at Courthouse Square.  It has become a visible reminder of a patriotic people in a country
devoted to “liberty and justice for all.”

Funding to install the proposed “flag poles” will once again come from individual and organizational
contributions.  The cost of this project will be $4000.00.  Will you please consider making a financial
donation to this project so we can complete our tribute?  Please make your check payable to the Jersey
County War Memorial Commission Fund, c/o Jersey County Treasurer’s Office.

We would like to dedicate the new flag poles on Veterans Day, November 11, 1992 and recognize
those who make a contribution.

                                                                                          Sincerely,
                                                                                          Joe Woolsey, Chairman
