Underground Railroad
The High School Drama Class spent a few hours touring the Cheney Site.  They are performing the play
"Our Town" this year and wanted to get a feel of the living conditions in the early 1900's.  It was a pleasure
to have these dedicated students as they seemed very interested and attentive during the tour.  We wish to
thank the class for this opportunity to share information concerning "Hickory Grove/Jerseyville"  I hope they
will return and bring their parents and friends for future tours.   ~    Bob French, President

In the dining room of the Cheney Mansion that was once the back room of the "Little Red House" the students
learned about the "underground railroad" and how Jersey County played a major role in help the slaves to
"Freedom".  Many abolitionists helped by serving as conductors for the railroad.  Several streets in the east
side of Jerseyville are named after these abolitionists; Cheney, Carpenter, Lott, Snedeker, Stryker, Burke,
Lovejoy, Leavett, McGill, and Adams.

The students enjoyed sitting in the desks as they learned what it was like to attend a one-room country
school house in the late 1800's and early 1900's.  Their teacher "Brett" had the honor of resting at the
teacher's desk.

School children started in the 1st grade and continued through the 8th grade in these country schools.  They
learned a lot by repetition hearing the same thing over and over again as the classes advanced to graduation.
